Mark's Bio & Tutoring Experience
I've had a knack for both math & science ever since I can remember; even when I took several AP-level courses in high school, they were always among my best subjects, and were the key reasons I decided to major in engineering in college. I initially did tutoring (mostly Chemistry if I recall) during my first couple years at Penn State. It wasn't until 2011 that I took up tutoring again, but the student I worked with ended up being the valedictorian of his high school class! My most recent efforts were just last fall/winter, when I taught Algebra to a co-worker's son and to a high-school freshman who has struggled both academically & personally.
I'm a very practical person by nature, and this is how I prefer to teach whenever possible. In my opinion, how a student feels about a subject tends to have some impact on how well they do with the material. Math is a terrific example of this - a student doesn't have to "love" doing it, but I'm still going to demonstrate its importance in the real world & teach them the skills needed to succeed in it, no matter what line of work they choose to pursue.
