My most valued experiences in tutoring are the "Aha!" moments when the student begins to understand a previously foreign and possibly frustrating concept. I like to use these moments to show the student that they are making progress that is beyond answering a homework question or problem on an exam.
Other tutors may be focused on nothing more than helping the student answer a problem set. I stand out by encouraging and guiding the student to understand the concepts and principles behind the problem. I have found the approach of teaching and practicing concepts rather than the memorization of equations leads to understanding. Understanding, in turn, leads to academic success.
