Mitt's Bio & Tutoring Experience

Most of my experience has been with coaching students for standardized tests. These tests include the TOEFL, SAT, GRE, and LSAT tests. However, I have also tutored students in French, Russian, Latin, Greek, Biblical Hebrew, Greek Myths, and European History. I have taught students from a variety of different backgrounds and levels of ability. However, I specialize in coaching two specific types of students:

The first of these is non-native speakers of English. Even when students speak English fluently and without a noticeable accent, there are certain strategies by which I can significantly improve their test performance that would not be taught in a class that is designed for native speakers. These include: (1) exercises in recognizing root words, (2) the diagnosis and correction of grammatical errors insignificant in speech, yet critical in advanced writing, and (3) techniques to improve reading speed and accuracy in analysis.

The other type of students in which I specialize are those already performing at a high level, yet still wanting to improve. Most tutors, test coaches, in particular, teach to the mean, which certainly helps most students. However, highly-scoring students typically know the fundamentals well and would be wasting their time doing any more than briefly reviewing them. Their time is better spent on a set of limited topics which are unique to each student and must be diagnosed on a case-by-case basis. My background in linguistics has attuned me to the analysis and classification of student errors and allows me to design exercises uniquely tailored to their remediation. Moreover, the performance of highly-scoring students is best improved by them becoming consciously aware of the things that they know intuitively. My background in teaching logical and analytical reasoning allows me to impart this awareness to them.
