Matthew's Bio & Tutoring Experience

I have experience with the Iowa public school system at both the K-12 and college levels. I received my high school diploma from Ames High School (2002) and my B.A. in History from the University of Northern Iowa (2008).

I have extensive education. I received my M.A. in History from the University of California, Irvine (2010). While at UCI, I gained experience teaching college students as a teaching assistant. This has had a strong impact on my tutoring skills, as working with students in class and one-on-one in office hours enabled me to have a strong sense of the challenges they face as they adapt to college-level work and expectations.

I also have a strong background in tutoring middle and high-school students. I have worked one-on-one with students in multiple subjects, ranging from math and science to English and history. I have taught several test-prep classes (both SAT and ACT) and worked with students on SAT subject tests and on AP exams. I have helped high-school students revise and polish their essays for admission to college, and I have helped middle-school students prepare for the SSAT and other high-school admissions exams.

All of my experience has taught me how to work with students with multiple learning styles and multiple needs. There is nothing more fulfilling than connecting with students and helping them gain the skills they need to expand their minds. Helping students with individual assignments and sharing knowledge with them is rewarding, but helping them realize they have the tools they need to thrive is the ultimate purpose of every tutoring lesson and relationship.
