Josip's Bio & Tutoring Experience

My name is Joe Vukancic, and I am currently a freshman in college at the University of Akron. While attending high school I have been able to receive college credit for many of the courses I took due to a program called PSEO (post secondary enrollment option). PSEO is a program that allows you to take college level courses at community college as a high school student. The community college that I attended was Lakeland community college. During my time at Lakeland, I have been able to sustain a 3.5+ gpa and have made the deans list 3 out 4 semesters. What separates me from many other freshmen, is that I am already half way done with my Graduate degree. I am an individual who is very competitive, hard working, and self-motivated. Although I have never quite had a tutoring job, I take great pride in helping out my younger siblings with their work and try to implement studying habits that I feel would be beneficial for them. I have two younger siblings, a younger brother who is in 9th grade, and a younger brother who is in 7th grade. Through the years of helping them out with their school work I have noticed that they have two very different learning styles. My younger brother who is in 9th grade is a visual learner, and my younger brother who is in 7th grade is a bit more of a verbal learner, but he also likes to apply logic and reasoning into his learning. Before tutoring/teaching somebody I feel like it is very important to understand what type of learning style a specific individual has. I have found that when drawing pictures and showing diagrams to my brother who is in 7th grade, he does not progress as quickly as I would like him to,and it seems like it really slows him down and holds him back. Vise Versa when I try to explain things using logic and reason to my brother who is in 9th grade he gets very confused. Being able help another student while they are struggling with a specific subject is a very humbling feeling. As a student I know there are times where I feel like school is very difficult, and for some people it is tougher than it is for others. I just want to be able to show students that through hard work, determination, and having a never quit mentality will bring you much farther than you may realize .
