Jessica's Bio & Tutoring Experience

I started tutoring in college. My first student was a ninth grader, who needed help in Latin. We focused mainly on grammar, while learning some vocabulary. She moved from a C to a high B average.

After college, I started substitute teaching, as well as private tutoring. This exposed me to a wide variety of ages and learning abilities. It was challenging and fun to see how kids learn differently, and it was very rewarding to see them work hard and do well. Around this time, I started tutoring a mildly autistic fifth grader. He needed help in Reading and Spelling. Although more difficult to teach than my other students, I learned a lot from him, as I hope he did from me.

Teaching is not a set of guidelines that you follow, although there is that element to it. A teacher has to be flexible and humble, always researching and keeping an open mind to new methods. A teacher must have a genuine interest in the well being of the students. A teacher must always be willing to change and adapt. These are a few attributes that make a good teacher, and I strive to emulate them.

My undergraduate degree is in Liberal Arts and Culture. Some see this as comparable to a General Studies major. That is not quite how I would put it, though my degree is definitely more broad than others. My degree focused on the the study and integration of classical philosophy, literature, music, art, languages, and sciences. It was a very copious degree, that taught me how to think and how to learn.
